Retiring Abroad: New U.S. Travel Rules - What Canadians Need to Know

The United States has long been a popular destination for Canadian retirees. Many Canadians are rethinking their travels to the U.S. as a form of protest against the current administration. However, the U.S. government itself has just made travel to the U.S. for an extended period of time more difficult for Canadians.

Under a new executive order issued by President Trump entitled “Protecting the American People Against Invasion”, Canadians traveling to the United States by car who are planning to stay longer than 30 days will need to register.

Visitors to the U.S. who are considered to have registered include “aliens admitted to the United States as non-immigrants who were issued Form I-94 in paper or electronic form.” If one enters the United States by air, one is most likely to be automatically issued an electronic I-94 when they land. However, visitors who enter through a land border are not usually issued an I-94, leaving the requirement to apply online applicable to them.
